What is an Aneurysm?

Aneurism is a bulge in any blood vessel of the body

Aortic Aneurysm

Aortic Aneurism is a bulge of the aorta which is the main blood vessel from the heart. If the aneurism is present in chest is called thoracic aneurysm and if it is in abdomen it is called abdominal aortic aneurysm.

How are aneurysm identified?

Aneurysm of thoracic and abdomen are diagnosed by X-rays /USG / CT / MRI. Many times they are asymptomatic.

The Symptoms are chest pain, back pain, change in voice, abdominal pain, feeling a pulsatile mass in abdomen, low back pain etc.

Aneurysms when they enlarge in size can rupture and cause catastrophic bleeding.

Hence any aneurysm in the chest or abdomen more than 4.5 cm in size needs treatments to reduce the risk of rupture.

How are aneurysm Treated?

Traditionally aneurysms are treated by open surgery in which the diseased portion of aorta is replaced by a graft.

What is Endovascular stent graft replacement?

Instead of Traditional open surgery, a small opening is made in the groin and a special stent graft is taken and deployed in aorta. In this new technique no opening of chest or abdomen are required. Hence instead of traditional open surgery, this new technique can be safely done in vast majority of patients.

Who does this procedure?

This procedure is done by a team of Cardiovascular Surgeon, Interventional Radiologist and Interventional Cardiologist, along with cardiac Anesthetists.

How long does the patient need to stay?

Patients needs a short stay of 3-4 days in the hospital

Can all aneurysms be treated by Endovascular stent graft replacement method?

  • No

  • A 64 slice CT angiogram is performed first and the images are carefully analyzed

  • Once it is done, the team of doctors sits together, analyse the images and decide which is the optimum treatment for the patient.
