Aneurysm - An Overview by MIOT Hospitals
Aneurism is an abnormal bulge in any
blood vessel of the body caused by disease
or weakening of the vessel wall. Aneurysms
in heart, called as Aortic Aneurysm,
most commonly occur in the aorta which is
the main blood vessel from the heart. As the
size of an aneurysm increases, there is an
increased risk of rupture, which can result
in severe haemorrhage or other complications
including sudden death.
The conventional treatment for aneurysm is a
major operation which involves blood
transfusions, use of heart-lung machine with
a longer hospital stay and sometimes with
associated complications.
Endovascular Stenting
Endovascular Stenting (or
Endovascular Stent Grafting) is a new
technique without Open Surgery. In the new
procedure a keyhole is made in the groin
under local anaesthesia and a tube graft is
introduced and placed inside the aneurysm.
Hence instead of traditional open surgery
(where opening of chest or abdomen are
normally required), this new technique can
be safely done in vast majority of patients.
Advantages of Endovascular Stenting
This procedure is done by a group of experts
consisting of cardiac surgeons,
interventional radiologists and
interventional cardiologists. For planning
and performing this procedure, 64 Slice CT
Scan, advanced scans, MRI, and Digital Cath
lab is necessary.
